RJ Griffith has teamed up with UK pop singer and former X Factor contestant, Becki Yates, for his latest single “When We Love.” The song puts a new twist on RJ’s customary R&B sound, pairing Griffith and Yates behind an EDM beat while singing about a complicated relationship, which many of us can relate to, especially during the current state of our world.
The song started out as an idea years ago when RJ and Becki were introduced through their managers back in 2017. However, with RJ living in Chicago, Illinois in the US and Becki living in Northamptonshire in the UK, a collaboration seemed unlikely initially. Although over three thousand miles away from each other, Griffith and Yates decided to keep in touch, bouncing song ideas and instrumentals off of each other until they finally found the right combination and decided to create a song together.
Considering the great distance and costly travel to do an in-person studio session together, each artist recorded their vocals in their respective cities and they were eventually mixed and mastered together to create the culmination of “When We Love.”
The finished product turned out amazing, but getting to that point was a much longer process than anticipated. Although much of the song was recorded pre-pandemic, there were many challenges to releasing the song once the coronavirus hit. Minor adjustments needed to be made to the song, but studios were closed, graphic designers couldn’t meet to discuss artwork in person, a release plan had to be completed via video chat, and the list goes on. Ultimately, Griffith and Yates were able to conquer these challenges for their first song together which was released on Thursday, September 30th, 2021.
Although encountering struggles throughout the creation of this song and trying to stay afloat during the pandemic, Griffith has been fortunate enough to continue doing music full-time. Yates, though, has decided to step away from creating music for the time being to focus on her new business. No matter what the future holds for each of these talented artists’, they will always have this song to look back on with fond, and not so fond memories of its creation and launch during a pandemic.
Griffith and Yates hope this song can help people relate to the strain the pandemic has put on many of our relationships. With its catchy lyrics and beat, maybe it can even get them out on the dance floor knowing that even through the difficult times love always prevails!
